Taxation system in the United States (US)

USA tax

It can be confusing for international and domestic citizens to file taxes. It is the responsibility of the IRS to collect federal taxes, regardless of citizenship or citizenship status. Taxes are imposed on citizens by many government agencies besides the federal government, state government, and local government. You may face heavy penalties if you do not file your state income tax return by the deadline. There are only seven states that don’t charge state income taxes: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. You have to understand how the Franchise Tax Board works to understand how the state tax system works.

System of taxation in the United States

In the US, there are many tax jurisdictions, ranging from federal to state to local to special-purpose jurisdictions. The US has both federal and state taxes, and both have a different tax outcome. As a result, in India, there is only one income tax return to file, whereas in the US, we need to file two separate returns. There may also be county or village taxes.

Accordingly, taxable income is not misunderstood based on financial reporting. A businessman will include all income, even when it isn’t taxable, in his balance sheet and other financial documents of his firm when he receives a federal tax refund.

Identification number for individual taxpayers (ITIN)

With the ITIN program, non-citizens can pay taxes without hassle. We must first learn about two primary forms of national identification as we examine the taxation system. ITINs are the primary form of national identification. For foreigners, noncitizens, or citizens without Social Security Numbers, ITINs are required. ITINs are nine-digit numbers used by non-US residents to file income tax returns.

In order to obtain an ITIN for a company, estate, trust, or partnership, you need an ITIN.

What are the benefits of ITIN?

ITIN can be used in the following ways:

  1. Tax returns to be filed;
  2. The deadline for filing a late tax return has passed;
  3. Account opening;
  4. Earnings made using government-issued social security numbers;
  5. Exemptions for dependents;
  6. Social benefits can also be claimed with ITIN.

Filling out the form

To obtain an individual taxpayer identification number, foreigners must submit Form W-7. An ITIN application must also contain proof of identity, country of origin, and other documents. After applying, you should receive your ITIN letter within 6 weeks. The IRS does not report you voluntarily to USCIS.

Income tax in the United States

Individuals must pay federal and state taxes after they receive their income. Taxation is basically a tax return.

Who are the tax residents?

The usa tax law requires people to file their tax returns if they hold a green card, are a US citizen, or have lived here for many years. This is based on the principle of “Earn High Pay High” and involves high taxes for high earners and lower taxes for low earners.

There is a standard deduction that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) allows for certain taxpayers. Not everyone can take this deduction. If you claim to be dependent, elderly, blind, or 65 years old, you’ll be taxed on your income rather than how much you owe the government.

The difference between tax credits and deductions perhaps seems subtle, but tax credits reduce tax dollars due to the government rather than reducing income.

A corporation or business house is also taxed on its income through corporate income tax (CIT). Payroll taxes are levied on wages and salaries, while Capital Gains Taxes are levied on capital assets, such as stocks, bonds, homes, etc. Below are the basic categories of income taxes:

Tax forms & income tax returns

A tax return is completed by the taxpayer giving details of the income earned and the tax owed on that income. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the federal tax authority, receives all U.S. tax returns.

Form 1040 – Individual Tax Returns

Form 1041 – Estate and Trust

Form 1065- Partnerships

Form 1120 – Corporations

Form 1120-S – S Corporation

Final thoughts

Apparently, tax law in usa is not an easy task by design, as you will need to fill out a number of forms and attach additional documents. Taxation in the United States is different from that in India. According to the IRS, you must spend 12 hours filing your taxes and pay about 230 dollars on average. For those who know how to navigate the tax code, forms in schedules can actually save you money. In places like Belgium, Spain, and Denmark, the process is even simpler. As long as you spend your money wisely and reduce your liabilities over the course of the year, paying taxes is not harmful.
